Before submitting any work to Inroads, please review the editorial guidelines here. If you decide you want to submit your work to Inroads, please follow these instructions.

Checklist for Submissions

Before you submit, keep these things in mind:

• Draft must be typo-free.

• Provide end notes for any references.

• Do not include images. The editors add images to go along with pieces as suits the feel of the issue.

• You must include a short biographical statement at the end of the article or poems. This will be published with your piece.

• Submission must be in a Word file, .doc or .docx, format.

1. Polish your piece according to the checklist above.

2. When it is ready, go to this submission form

3. Complete the form and upload your file.

What to Expect After Submission

1. All pieces submitted ahead of the deadline are held in queue for review until after the deadline.

2. After deadline, editors will review your submission and either return it, make suggestions for revisions, ask to hold it for another issue, or accept it as is for the current issue.

3. If accepted for this issue, we will hold it until the next “issue” is released. In general, we aim to have pieces approved for a particular issue date by one month before that date. Submissions that we either cannot get to or which are submitted after that date will be considered for the following issue.

Here is our current working calendar for Issue 2:

• Submission deadline: May 1, 2026

• Review, selection, and revision period: May 1 to July 1

• Production: July 1 to Aug 1

• Publication: Aug 1

Late submissions are entered into the next issue queue.

Promotional Guidelines

All contributors are asked to promote their piece at the time of publication. We are developing specific guidelines for how and where to do this, but generally it will include your social media, email, and using Notes on Substack. Please be sure to acknowledge that you are willing to share in the promotion of the magazine in this way along with your submission.

Inroads is a publication directed at men engaged in mythopoetic work. Why men? Because so many men are looking for an alternative to the toxic masculinity of today. We’ve been taught not to share feelings or be vulnerable. We’ve been taught to dominate. Some men’s movements and groups accentuate this attitude. Here at Inroads, we offer an alternative, a way to the deep soul, rich experience, or what Joseph Campbell called “the rapture of being alive.”. Our readers are people with interests in poetry, story, mythology, depth psychology, and a deeper experience of life. Hence, we publish pieces that support our audience in that vein.

Inroads is dedicated to the inner life of men. While this naturally means that we look for mythopoetic perspectives and poetic creativity, we do so on topics ranging from deep inner psychology to the impact of our culture and current politics. The subject is less important than the angle.

Poetry

We are primarily interested in poetry with deep reverberations, which usually means it includes wild images (perhaps like Mary Oliver), leaps of imagination (such as Robert Bly wrote about), insights that open into deep channels (like William Stafford), places of connectedness & grounding (Wendell Berry). We like spiritual poems (like Rumi and Hafez), but have found that they are difficult for people to pull off effectively. We are less interested in confessional poetry.

Essays and Prose

We love essays that:

• Use mythology, story, or even pop culture imagery to shine a light into the depths of the human experience.

• Mythologize every day life to, as James Hillman once said, “deepen events into experiences.”

• Explore psychological archetypes—their phenomenology, imagery, and application to life.

• Tie myth and psychology to current events, thereby opening deeper reflections of the cultural landscape.

• Explore humanity’s deep connection to the natural world through the heart and philosophical ideas.

Inroads is not afraid of controversy, debate, and discussion. We encourage it. Celebrations of books, leaders, and other works in mythopoetics are welcome, and so are criticisms. Our job is to foster conversation.
