We selected the pieces in this “issue” from among the originally published volumes of Inroads. Our idea was to give readers and contributors an idea of what Inroads is all about and kind of work we are looking for. “Male Naivete and the Loss of the Kingdom,” for example, is Robert Bly’s illumination of a Grimm Brothers fairy story. Anthony Signorelli’s “Passion and the Hero” also illuminates a story, this one from Africa. Whether a fairy tale, a dream, or cultural phenomena, Inroads is interested in deepening our perspective on human experience through myth and symbol. “Chewing Magic Words,” by Andrew Dick, exemplifies our desire to reflect and consider carefully our own teachings and thought so as to help us stay out of blind assumptions of truth. We want to ask the hard questions of ourselves and the work we are doing—recognizing both the gifts and the limitations it presents to us. “A New Roof” by Timothy Young shows a way in which work in our contemporary world can be—with the help of clear intention and careful consciousness—a path of deeper experiences, even to initiation. The poems selected here illustrate our preference for imaginative work of beauty.

By no means is Inroads limited to these example areas. Over the years of the original magazine, we also sought to reflect more deeply on political and cultural events like the first Gulf War. We asked not about the politics, but rather, about the inner realities that the cultural events created. Same with men’s experiences with their fathers and their sons. Writers reflected on the dark sides within us all. In many ways, the work we published reflected James Hillman’s idea of “deepening events into experiences.”

And, in many ways, that’s exactly what we hope to do now.
